WHY HORSES?

Horses are highly sensitive to the emotions and energy around them, which makes them ideal partners in therapy.

Why Equine Therapy?

Equine therapy (also known as Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, or EAP) is a powerful method for addressing a variety of mental health issues. Unlike traditional therapy sessions that take place in an office setting, equine therapy immerses participants in a dynamic, hands-on experience with horses. Through activities such as grooming, leading, and sometimes riding horses, individuals work on emotional regulation, communication skills, and self-awareness.

Our horses are intuitive and sensitive to emotions, offering immediate and non-judgmental feedback. This allows participants to reflect on their feelings and behaviors in a safe and supportive environment.

Benefits of Equine-Assisted Therapy at Horsin' Around

  • Build Emotional Awareness: Horses can sense and respond to emotions. By observing and interacting with them, participants gain a deeper understanding of their own emotional states.

  • Develop Confidence: Working with horses encourages assertiveness and decision-making. Every interaction with the horse offers a chance to practice self-assurance.

  • Improve Communication: Horses rely on non-verbal cues, helping participants become more attuned to body language and interpersonal communication.

  • Enhance Problem-Solving Skills: The challenges involved in guiding and working with a horse help improve critical thinking and creative problem-solving.

  • Reduce Anxiety and Stress: Being around animals has been shown to lower stress levels and anxiety, while the outdoor environment of our therapy sessions provides a calm and relaxing backdrop.

  • Anxiety & Depression: The calming nature of horses and the mindfulness needed to engage with them helps reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • PTSD: Veterans and trauma survivors often find comfort in working with horses, as it allows them to process difficult emotions in a non-verbal, physical way.

  • Addiction Recovery: Horses foster responsibility and trust, making them great partners for those on the path to recovery from addiction.

  • ADHD & Autism: Working with horses can help individuals with attention-deficit or autism spectrum disorders build focus, patience, and communication skills.

  • Relationship Difficulties: Couples and families often find that equine therapy strengthens trust, improves communication, and fosters collaboration.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Assessment & Introduction: We begin by learning about your unique challenges and goals. We then introduce you to the horses, discussing their role in the therapy process.

  2. Interactive Sessions: You’ll engage in various horse-related activities, such as grooming, leading, or feeding the horses. Each task helps build emotional awareness, problem-solving skills, and trust.

  3. Reflection & Feedback: After each session, we’ll help you reflect on your interactions with the horse, exploring what you learned about yourself and how these insights can be applied to your everyday life.

  4. Continued Growth: As you progress, you’ll continue to develop new skills and insights with each session. The experiential nature of equine therapy ensures that every interaction is unique and impactful.

Why Horses?

Horses are social animals, much like humans. They live in herds and have their own communication styles. They are highly sensitive to the emotions and energy around them, which makes them ideal partners in therapy. Because they are prey animals, horses are naturally intuitive and constantly aware of their surroundings. This heightened awareness allows them to mirror the emotions of those they interact with, offering profound feedback to those in therapy.

The horse’s ability to respond to emotional and physical cues from humans provides a unique therapeutic dynamic that is unmatched by other types of therapy.

Fun!

Disability does not have to limit someone from riding or caring for horses.

Throughout the world, thousands of individuals with disabilities experience the rewarding benefits of horsemanship. A disability does not have to limit a person from riding horses, therapeutic driving, interactive vaulting or even competition.

Benefits

Experiencing the motion of a horse can be very therapeutic. Because horseback riding rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. In addition to the therapeutic benefits, horseback riding also provides recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors. Therapeutic/adaptive horsemanship contributes to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with disabilities.
